Scott A. Norton, MD, MPH, MSc

dr-nortonScott A. Norton, MD, MPH, MSc, was a field ecologist before entering medical school and that training is evident when he sees patients with puzzling skin conditions. Dr Norton takes a broad, ecological perspective to evaluate the complex causes and consequences of challenging skin disorders. His dermatologic interests include general dermatology in adults; pediatric dermatology; tropical medicine, traveler’s health, and infectious diseases; and genetic skin conditions in children or adults.

Dr Norton earned his undergraduate degree at Tulane University in New Orleans, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. After college, he received a Fulbright Scholarship to New Zealand to conduct field research in plant-animal co-evolution, earning a Masters of Science with Distinctive Honours from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. Several years later, he returned to Tulane University for degrees in Medicine and in Public Health, where he was selected for the academic honor societies in those fields as well.

Dr Norton served as a career medical officer in the US Army and was Chief of Dermatology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for several years. After the events of 9/11 and the anthrax scare in late 2001, Dr Norton worked with the CDC to prepare for threats of bioterrorism. He helped develop the CDC’s approach to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of smallpox, anthrax, and other communicable diseases. While with the federal government, his overseas medical experiences included duties in twenty countries, where he worked on clinical, humanitarian, educational, and public health projects.

After retiring from the military, he established the Pediatric Dermatology Service at Children’s National Hospital in Washington. At Children’s National, he trained medical students and residents from all the medical schools and hospitals in the DC area. After ten years, he retired from that position in 2020, although he maintains his faculty positions as Adjunct Professor of Dermatology and Pediatrics at George Washington University and as Adjunct Professor of Dermatology and Preventive Medicine at Uniformed Services University.

Dr Norton continues to serve as a consultant in Dermatology and in Tropical Medicine for the Peace Corps and the CDC, and other federal agencies and international organizations. Other academic interests include ethnobotany (traditional uses of plants), medical entomology and parasitology, and medical anthropology.

Dr Norton has written more than 100 articles published in medical journals and textbooks, including papers published in New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, and Lancet. He is frequently invited to speak at medical schools and international scientific societies in the US and around the world. His textbook chapters on tropical medicine and infectious diseases of the skin appear in major textbooks in the fields of dermatology, internal medicine, and global health.

Dr Norton is the senior author of several chapters in the CDC’s manual on global travel (CDC Yellow Book: Health Information for International Travel). These can be read online at:

He has worked at the Dermatologic Surgery Center of Washington since autumn of 2022.

“My melanoma was treated at the Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Gary Peck was the director of the Melanoma Center there. When Dr. Peck retired from the hospital he joined the practice of Dr. Maral Skelsey in Chevy Chase, MD. Since then, I have continued my follow-up visits with Dr. Peck at Dr. Skelsey’s office, even though it is at a great distance from my home. I do this because Dr. Peck is expert in diagnosing melanomas and takes his time examining me and answering all the questions that I and my wife have. He is a very caring professional who is truly concerned about his patients.”
